The
article investigates the fall in fertility
rates in post Soviet era Russia. Immediately
after the demise of the Soviet Union,
all social, economic and demographic variables
witnessed a sharp worsening in Russia,
with fertility rates falling to the Great
War period levels. The author argues that
the transition from a planned economy
to a neo-liberal market driven economy
bears an impact similar to a war on reproductive
behaviour and population growth.
