Introduction
The post-pandemic global economy has been grappling with multiple challenges, with the fallout in most parts of the Global South being particularly adverse. Addressing long-unattended development deficits, reflected starkly in the persisting shortfalls in realising the SDG goals and targets, is proving difficult because of structural obstacles to the mobilisation and deployment of global resources, the subordination of all else to the interests of global capital, the increase in extreme weather events that create new responsibilities even while the old persist, and the consequences of geopolitical tensions embedded in the same unequal world order. Creating the conditions for adopting and finding ways of implementing a development policy framework that replaces the current neoliberal regime is imperative. The workshop will focus on the myriad policy proposals that together can offer that alternative, attempt to understand why they can work, and deliberate on the structural obstacles to adoption of such policies. The pursuit of a renewed reform agenda for development is of course predicated on many domestic and international factors including a responsive international financial architecture, mediated cross-border flows of capital, pre-emptive regulations to mitigate against systemic risks and institutional reform to deliver on a system of just multilateralism. The prospects for such shifts at the global level must be assessed.
To address these challenge at a conceptual level, IDEAs and Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, are hosting a 5-day workshop for senior undergraduates and graduate students, primarily from the Southeast Asian region, focusing on global macroeconomic policy, uneven economic development, development finance, sovereign debt, wealth and income inequality and the role of labour markets in an era of climate change adaptation.
The workshop will expose participants to frontier areas of research in international political economy, macroeconomics, and finance. Expressions of interest from potential participants from elsewhere in Asia are welcome, but preference would be for students from Southeast Asia. English would be the working language in all sessions.
Eligibility
Applicants should have completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree with some exposure to economics. Candidates who have completed post-graduation in other social science disciplines, but are keen to enrol in this workshop, are also welcome to apply.
