Gender, Conflict and Development IDEAs Roundtable at IAFFE 2024, 4 July 2024.

Several parts of the world have seen severe conflict and violence that have caused massive displacements, crumbling livelihoods and deteriorating conditions of existence for vast populations affected by them. Conflicts and violence are often related to economic conditions and inequalities based on class, gender, race and ethnicity that have local dimensions in specific contexts but are also related to international power dynamics and attendant global inequalities.  It has been seen in diverse contexts of violence, both episodic and chronic, that the impact on women and gender relations  are significant. Not only are women affected as targets of violence, but conflict-ridden contexts also affect how gendered norms relating to work, access to assets and resources play out in populations affected by the conflict. During conflicts, women often have to take on economic responsibilities as breadwinners in their family; on the contrary, gender norms could also push women out of labour markets and employment due to the threat of violence. The access to resources and facilities such as relief, health and sanitation can also be driven by gender relations.

IDEAs proposes to host a roundtable on Gender, Conflict and Development during IAFFE 2024 that will address the following questions: What are the economic aspects of violent conflict situations in different parts of the world and what are their gendered dimensions? What are the impacts of violence on gender roles, outcomes and the prospects of further gender-based violence? How can gender be considered an important dimension that needs to be factored in for policies relating to post-conflict reconstruction and the alleviation of violence?

The roundtable will present analytical frames for addressing the issues as well as diversity of empirical evidence from different parts of the world. The format will be interactive, between the panelists named below as well as with audience members, structured and moderated to address the key questions mentioned above. It is hoped that the experiences from the different parts of the world, especially the Global South, that will be addressed by the panelists will be expanded by the participation of those who attend the event.
