In
this paper the author discusses the potential of rapid
regional integration of East African nations as a
process to counter the challenges of globalisation.
The paper highlights the main benefits of integration
in terms of bigger market, economies of scale, and
a better resource pool. He further suggests that that
integration should be rapid rather than the 'Go Slow'
approach proposed by many. Such an integrated entity
should also rethink the 'free trade' theory by revisiting
the debate between 'free trade' and production economics
theory. The integrated unit would be better equipped
to evolve a developmental trajectory based on welfare
state theory rather than fall prey to neo-liberal
economic dictates.
